Want Teeth Like Aaron Judge—What Should I Ask the Dentist For?

Posted on September 15, 2021 by Athena Smiles.

I have a consult with a dentist next week and I want to go in with a better idea of my options to be sure I don’t get taken for a ride. What I’m looking for is something similar to what Aaron Judge had done to his teeth. He’s a Yankee’s outfielder, if you’re not familiar.

His front teeth always looked a little different. Kind of peg-like with a gap between them. When he came back this year, the gap was gone and his teeth look fuller. Mine are sort of like his used to be but the upside-down V-shaped gap is a bit more pronounced. I always thought I’d need to get braces to fix it, but his transformation was fast, so I don’t think he did that. Any insights would be appreciated.

Dear Yankees Fan,

Aaron Judge has a great smile! Let’s dig into what dental work he had done and also why you might not want to specifically ask for the same treatment.

Take a Closer Look at Older Pictures of Aaron Judge

If you take a closer look at older photos of Aaron Judge’s teeth, you’ll note that there’s more going on than just the gap and what you describe as “peg-shaped” teeth. The photo shown here gives a better view across his smile line going back a few more teeth. See anything?

Yes, he didn’t just have gap between his front teeth. He had gaps between all the teeth that show when he smiles.

How Did Aaron Judge Fix His Teeth?

Now, Aaron Judge’s teeth have a fuller, straighter appearance, and that gap you noted is gone, as are the gaps between his other teeth. In other words, this was more than likely a total smile makeover rather than a single cosmetic fix.

Dentists address in-depth smile makeovers in a variety of ways. As you noted, braces or Invisalign are sometimes involved. Given that options like Invisalign can be taken out, it’s possible he did go through some form of orthodontics as part of his care and simply removed the appliance while in public.

However, it’s more likely he jumped right into an option like porcelain veneers. These can be thought of as “shells” that hug the front surface of the tooth and wrap around the edges a bit, but don’t fully enclose the tooth. With veneers, you can make teeth look straighter, brighter, and fuller, plus close gaps or fix chips instantly.

Ask Your Dentist What He Recommends

The problem with going in and asking for veneers is that you may need something else done to achieve a similar look or the dentist you’re consulting may not be particularly skilled when it comes to placing veneers. They’re an art form. It takes quite a bit to make them look natural and aesthetically pleasing.

Instead, ask the dentist what he recommends and why he recommends that treatment. You can still use Judge as a point of reference to indicate the end result you’re hoping for though. It’s also a good idea to ask for before and after photos of the dentist’s real patients so you can get a better feel for his abilities. If you don’t love the photos you see or you aren’t confident about his recommendations, get a second opinion. Best of luck to you.

Dentist Wants Me to Whiten Before Lumineers

Posted on November 27, 2018 by writeradmin.

I’m about to get Lumineers. I’m very excited about it but now my dentist said he’d like me to get my teeth whitened first. Is that really necessary? Isn’t one of the benefits of getting Lumineers to change the color of your teeth? Won’t the Lumineers do what the teeth whitening will?

Karen

Dear Karen,

Lumineers advert

How I answer your question depends on why your dentist is wanting you to whiten your teeth. If you are planning on getting the Lumineers brand of porcelain veneers on both your upper and lower arches, or if you are just getting them on your upper arch.

If you are getting your porcelain veneers on both upper and lower teeth, there is only a need to whiten your teeth if you have a wide smile. Most patients get between six to eight veneers. However, if you have a very wide smile, you may have ten to twelve visible teeth. If you don’t want to spend the money to get each of those teeth veneered, you would whiten your teeth ahead of time, so they will be close enough to the re-done teeth for them to look natural together.

If you don’t have a wide smile and your visible teeth will be covered, there really isn’t a reason to whiten your teeth. You’re correct that the Lumineers will do that for you.

When Do Whitening and Veneers Go Together?

However, most patients don’t want to pay for veneers on both their upper and lower teeth. Instead, they’ll just have the smile makeover done on the upper teeth, which are very visible when you smile. Then, on the bottom teeth which are only visible briefly while you’re speaking, you can use teeth whitening which makes it look like both arches are the same.

The big benefit to doing it this way is the money savings. It is significantly more affordable for you to whiten your bottom arch than it is to veneer the additional teeth. It’s likely instead of trying to get you to do an additional procedure to make money, your dentist is trying to save you money.

Is There a Way to Get an Affordable Full Mouth Reconstruction?

Posted on September 22, 2017 by iowasmiles.

I’d never been to the dentist until recently. I’m 27. My parents never took us. They weren’t selfish or neglectful parents. We were very poor and it truly was a choice between the dentist or food.  I’ve gotten a job which has dental insurance. I was very excited for my first dental appointment. I had reasonable expectations and knew I’d need a lot of work. I did. I have chipped teeth, several cavities, and need something called crowns. Plus, one tooth that we may not be able to keep. When I finished my first appointment, he recommended I have a full mouth reconstruction. I liked the idea. It will be great to have a beautiful smile for the first time since I can remember.  But, the cost was beyond my ability to pay even with insurance. So, I wondered if there were dentists who did cheaper full mouth reconstructions. Any help you can provide will be appreciated.

Deanna T.

Dear Deanna,

A dollar sign hatching out of an egg

I’m excited for you in your first experiences with dentistry. And, while there are many procedures in which it would be absolutely fine to find the most affordable dentist around, a full mouth reconstruction is not one of them.

It is such an advanced procedure that not many dentists are qualified to do it. If you just base it on cost, you’ll likely end up with a disaster which can even lead to serious health problems.

But, don’t get discouraged. Based on what the dentist told you was wrong with your teeth, I don’t necessarily think a full mouth reconstruction is even what you need.  You can still get the beautiful smile you want, but without the high cost and risk of a complete reconstruction.

You mentioned needing dental crowns, but seemed not to understand what they are. What concerns me about that is the dentist you went to is recommending one of the most expensive and advanced procedures around, but hasn’t taken the time to explain what even the basic procedures mean.

A porcelain crown A crown is a porcelain prosthetic, shaped like a tooth, which fits over your natural tooth. Your natural tooth will have to be shaved down so the crown can fit over it. They’re often used when the cavity on your tooth is too large for a filling to properly protect it.

What I’d like you to do is get a second opinion by another dentist. It may be you can get significantly less work done and still have a gorgeous, healthy smile. If you’re looking to beautify your smile along with repairing any decay, I’d like to recommend you get your teeth whitened BEFORE you have any crowns made, especially on teeth visible when you smile.

Teeth whitening only works on natural tooth structure, so once the crown is completed the color cannot be changed. You’ll want the dentist to match the crown to your whiter color.

After you’ve taken care of any decay and other degenerative issues, if you still aren’t happy with the appearance of your teeth, you can get porcelain veneers. They can completely change the appearance of your teeth. But you’ll have to have healthy teeth first.

Supersmile Toothpaste

Posted on June 24, 2013 by iowasmiles.

I’ve heard that Supersmile toothpaste is good for porcelain veneers. Does it work with porcelain crowns too?

Emily S.- St. Louis

Emily,

Supersmile toothpaste is fine to use for porcelain crowns. It is specifically designed to use with dental work. It is great at helping to remove stains without damaging the porcelain.

Can I whiten fake teeth?

Posted on June 8, 2013 by iowasmiles.

I have two missing teeth that have been missing since birth.  Right now I have two fake teeth on a retainer that are used to replace them.  I’m hoping to get dental implants when I’m done saving up for them. I’m a little embarrassed, but my other teeth are pretty yellow. I’m hoping to get my teeth whitened. I was wondering if my fake teeth will whiten also?

Olivia R.- Madison, WI

Olivia,

You’ve asked a great question. No, fake teeth will not whiten. In fact, you can’t whiten any dental work, such as porcelain crowns or porcelain veneers. Only your natural teeth will respond to teeth whitening.

My recommendation is that a few weeks before you get your dental implants, you have your teeth whitened. This gives your tooth color time to settle in and your dentist can match the dental implants to your new white color.
