I have been wearing a CPAP for a couple of weeks now. My dentist insists I will adjust to it, but I just haven’t been able to. Is there any other option? I can’t imagine spending the remainder of my life with this machine.

Dear Corbin,
While some people adapt to a CPAP, others never do. The good news is, for many patients, there is an alternative to wearing your CPAP. However, you don’t want to just stop using your CPAP until you are on the new treatment option. Sleep apnea is serious and increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.
The Alternative to the CPAP
There is an anterior positioning splint which can be worn at night. This fits a bit like a sport’s mouthguard. This is much more comfortable and doesn’t make any noise, unlike the horrendous sound you’re used to hearing.
I would talk to your dentist and see if he offers one. If not, you could always go to another dentist just to have your sleep apnea treated. Ofen, your medical doctor can write a prescription for you to get a sleep study. This will significantly cut down the cost for yourself.
