My sister went berzerk when I told her that I still get silver fillings. She went on and on about how poisonous they are. I’ve been getting them since I was a kid. What is the problem with them?
Dana C. – Detroit
Dana,
First, I’ll let you know that the ADA has publicly stated that silver amalgam fillings are safe. That being said, silver fillings are actually mostly made of mercury. Many people (your sister included) are worried about the possible health effects from mercury and mercury vapor. The longer you have the fillings, the more likely they are to leak.
Mercury poisoning has been linked to neurological as well as muscular problems. Babies and children are especially vulnerable, which is why the ADA asks pregnant women to avoid fish athat are high in mercury. These days, you don’t have to get amalgam fillings. There are white composite fillings which are mercury free. If you’re concerned about your current fillings, mercury free dentists can give you sanitary removal.
